Aadhaar card has inevitably become an essential document for a person not only to authenticate his/her identity and take advantage of government’s social welfare schemes but also for monetary purposes like, tax return filing and maintaining the various bank account.
Linking a person’s mobile number to his/her aadhaar card has many advantages. For instance, a person is able to do electronic verification of his/her income tax return with the help of aadhaar card. In order to do this, an OTP is sent to that mobile number that is to be linked to his/her aadhaar. A person’s personal details can also be updated that are linked to his/her aadhaar card. After that, a person needs to download the e-aadhaar card (electronic aadhaar card) from the government’s website of aadhaar.
If a person needs to link his/her mobile number to the aadhaar card, then there are generally these cases:
Case 1) A person is linking the aadhaar card for the first time i.e. first-time registration
Case 2) A person has changed his/her phone number and needs to update it by replacing the old number with the new one.
First time registration for linking aadhaar card to mobile number
Nowadays most of the on-line transactions are OTP (One Time Password) authenticated that is the transactions are taken place after verifying through the OTP. First time users need to register their mobile numbers so that they can get the OTP to their mobile number as without this the linking is not possible. To do this registration one needs to follow these steps:
First a person needs to visit the nearest Aadhaar centre to get the aadhaar form or else he/she can download it from the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) website.
Fill in all the required details properly; submit the form to the concerned person after mentioning that only mobile number is to be linked.
At the time of submitting the form, one needs to attach the photocopy of your aadhaar card and a photocopy of Identity proof that includes voter ID card, PAN Card, Passport.
After that there is verification of the person’s biometrics that have already been registered at the time of aadhaar registration at the centre. The person’s thumb impression is also verified at the enrolment centre.
After all the verification formalities, the person receives the acknowledgement slip. Generally, 2-5 working days are taken for the procedure of updating things but according to the UIDAI helpline, the TAT (turnaround time) that is the total time taken for the whole process of updating is 10 days.
Changed mobile number update
Before updating a mobile number to the aadhaar card details a person should make sure that his/her mobile number has already registered and linked to aadhaar so as to receive the OTP for authentication that is sent to the registered mobile number only to confirm the updating. A person needs to submit the OTP received on the old mobile number for the authentication process to update the new mobile number.
First visit the UIDAI website, click on the tab named ‘aadhaar update’ that leads the user to the ‘aadhaar self-service portal’.
In the next step, enter your aadhaar number, and the Captcha text shown there following which request for the OTP (One Time Password).
The requested OTP is sent to the person’s mobile number that needs to be submitted in the next step on asking. After the OTP submission, the page will direct the person to a new page on that all the details which need to be updated can be replaced with the current one.
Then under the field of ‘select field (s) to update’, select mobile number option.
And finally, just enter the new mobile number that needs to be updated and then click on the submit button.
